No evidence yet for ultralow LDL-cholesterol levels, according to Michigan researchers

"A new review published in the October 3, 2006 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine argues that while there is compelling evidence supporting moderate to high-dose statin therapy in patients at high cardiovascular risk, there is no clinical evidence supporting the recommended treatment target of ultralow LDL-cholesterol levels, such as the proposed <70 mg/dL, in high-risk patients."

All about good, bad cholesterol

"The word cholesterol may sound harmless. After all, one dictionary defines it simply as a white substance found in animal tissue. In truth, cholesterol can be very dangerous and accounts for a growing number of heart disease cases in the United States, and it may be implicated in many of the 500,000 heart disease deaths here each year. That makes cholesterol a silent killer, said Dr. Elena Citkowitz, who runs the Cholesterol Management Center at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven and is director of its Cardiac Rehabilitation Program."

Testign Your Cholesterol

"Think of it this way, the cars on the freeway are the particles of cholesterol clogging up your arteries. The passengers in the cars represent your bad cholesterol number, let's say it's 120, and 120 small cars are more likely to cause a traffic jam than 120 people in two big buses."

Cholesterol Challenge

"Your family history may put you at risk for high cholesterol since certain genes are associated with elevated cholesterol levels. People with these genes can develop cholesterol problems, even when they eat well and exercise. For others, lifestyle factors and diet, such as eating high amounts of saturated fats, determine their cholesterol levels. Managing cholesterol is important for all adults, regardless of age or health status. While some risk factors (age, gender, family history) are out of your control, other factors (diet, weight, activity level) can improve your cholesterol levels."

Study Questions Value of Lower Cholesterol Targets

"There's no clear evidence that very low levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol benefit people at high risk for heart disease. Instead, the emphasis should be on getting more of these patients to take statin drugs, says a U.S. study."
